Training Questions
- Q. Does the correction cause pain or harm to my dog?
-
A. Absolutely not. The static shock corrections are annoying and startling, without being harmful. Think of the shock that we receive after walking across a carpet and touching the wall.

- Q. How old does a dog have to be before starting training?
-
A. Every dog is different, but generally speaking, dogs should be 6 months old before beginning training with a remote training system.

- Q. Can an owner use the containment system to train other dogs from coming into the owner's yard?
-
A. Only if they are wearing a collar/receiver.

- Q. My dog does a lot of swimming while we are hunting. Can the Retriever Trainer correct my dog if he is swimming?
-
A. Yes, provided both probes are making good contact and the dog is in range. Make sure that the receptacle cover (mud plug) is flush with the casing of the collar receiver. When the dog is wet and standing on dry land, the stimulation will spread over a larger area of the neck, increasing conductivity. Use a lower stimulation.

- Q. How long should I leave the flags up?
-
A. This varies, according to your dog. It usually takes 2-4 weeks for a dog to learn the boundaries of the system.

- Q. What is a "safe zone"?
-
A. The safe zone is the area where your dog can run free without receiving corrections or warnings.

- Q. How many dogs can I put on the system?
-
A. As many as you wish. Each dog must have its own receiver/collar.

- Q. How do I get my dog used to the new containment system?
-
A. Although this system is effective, and training takes place quickly, training is NOT instantly effective. It will take 2-4 weeks for your dog to be completely trained. Before beginning training, place the boundary flags at the beginning of the warning zone -- these are temporary visual cues that youll take down once the training is complete. All remote training should start with ON LEASH training. The first day, lead your dog to the boundary, point to the flag, and say NO. Lead away from the boundary, and repeat along the entire system. Over the next few days, train on the leash some more, with the receiver/collar on and activated. Lead your dog into the warning zone, and pull it back after it feels the warning. When your dog seems to get it, train without the leash. Dont leave your dog alone with the system activated, until youre sure that your pet understands the system and its new boundaries.

- Q. What happens if my dog gets stuck in the correction zone?
-
A. If for any reason your dog gets stuck in the Innotek correction zone (paw trapped, for example), the system will automatically shut down after 20 seconds of delivering correction, allowing your dog to get itself unstuck without the annoyance of repeated corrections. The system will reboot itself again and be operative again after a 5-second pause, enough to let your dog get back to the safety zone.

Technical Questions
- Q. How do I create a dead zone?
-
A. A dead zone is an area that passes through the active correction boundary that doesnt provide correction (near doors, for instance). To create a dead zone where your dog can pass freely, simply lay two strands of wire together, within 6 feet of each other. DO NOT put 3 strands together, for 2 will cancel each other out, but the 3rd will reactivate the system!

- Q. Can I use a different wire other than that supplied with my pet containment system?
-
A. It is always best to use the wire that is provided with your system. The gauge affects the strength and power of the system. You can order extra wire in the Accessories section of this site.

- Q. Why cant I locate my transmitter inside my metal shed?
-
A. Metal may interfere with the transmission of the signals.
[Top of page]
- Q. Why cant I locate my transmitter on my back-porch?
-
A. The transmitter needs to be kept dry in order to function properly.

- Q. Can I expand the containment area by connecting more wire to the wire provided with the system?
-
A. Yes. You can add more wire up to the capacity that the system is designed to handle. Twist the ends of the adjoining wires together to expand boundary distances.

- Q. Can I run my wire through my house?
-
A. It is possible to run wire through the house. However, appliances, metal pipes, and inside wiring may affect the functioning of the system, and your dog may receive unnecessary correction while roaming through the house.

- Q. Does the system affect or interfere with pace makers?
-
A. It is possible. Check with your physician about your particular pace maker and your particular system.
[Top of page]
- Q. How deep must the wire be buried?
-
A. Wire should be buried 2-4, in order to protect it from people and animals tripping over it, lawn mowers, cars, and other things. It is O.K. to NOT bury the wire, yet exposed wire tends to create inconveniences for pet owners. Also, you can bury the wire as deeply as you want, and the signal will still transmit and be effective.

- Q. How do I run the wire across driveways and concrete?
-
A. In concrete, it may be possible to press the wire into the seams and joints. With other surfaces, like asphalt, it may be necessary to cut a groove with a saw and place the wire into the groove. Or, it is possible to run the wire through a plastic hose or pipe.

- Q. Can I use this system with a metal or wood fence?
-
A. Yes. Many dog owners use the containment system to reinforce other fences. Be aware, however, that metal fences may disrupt the proper functioning of the system.

- Q. Can I mix and match receiver collars?
-
A. On Innotek systems, you can use any containment collar with the Indoor Room Free system as well. Otherwise, use the exact collar that came with your system.
[Top of page]
- Q. Are the rechargeable batteries replaceable?
-
A. NO. Once they batteries finally die (after several years), the entire unit needs to be replaced.
[Top of page]
- Q. How many dogs can be trained with the contain and train systems?
-
A. With the Innotek systems, you can do obedience training with 1 or 2 dogs with a single remote transmitter. The containment features work with an unlimited number of dogs.
[Top of page]
- Q. Is it possible to overcharge the rechargeable batteries?
-
A. No. Safety shut-off prevents overcharging (after about 12 hours).
